Energy Express

What we do

what we do collage The short answer is that Energy Express provides reading and nutrition assistance during the summer months to children who might not otherwise have access to it. The broader answer is that Energy Express changes outcomes, opportunities, and lives.

Through creative, colorful, and captivating uses of art, drama, and vocabulary, nearly 3,000 children gain or maintain their reading levels during summer months.

When the school bell rings for the final time each June it signals the beginning of summer months. But, for many West Virginia children, it also signals the end of the security of having two meals served to them each weekday.

Energy Express provides children with two nutritious meals each day during the program.

From mentors, to coordinators, to superintendents – the entire community provides a service to help make Energy Express work in their towns. Under the leadership of WVU Extension Service and AmeriCorps, everything from cooks, volunteers, and mentors is arranged by Energy Express.
